Concert Variations on 'Greensleeves' (2010)
The Concert Variations on “Greensleeves” were the result of a suggestion by the celebrated British organist Christopher Herrick, who gave the first performance during the “La Verna International Organ Festival” in Tuscany (Italy) in July 2011. The piece opens with a solemn introduction followed by the “Greensleeves” theme. There then follows a set of eight variations in different styles including a Royal March, a Celtic Melody, a Pedal Solo, a Pastorale, an ecstatic Adagio and a Toccata. All the variations are rich in colour and try to explore all the possibilities of timbre and virtuosity.
This piece was written at the beginning of 2012. It was commissioned by Martina Doehring (soprano) and Aivars Kalejs (Organ) who premiered it in St. Augustine church, Hannover, in February 2012. It was originally conceived for soprano and organ, although is equally possible and fitting to play the melody with a soloist instrument (Flute, violin, oboe, etc). Vocalise is reminiscent of the melodic style of Morricone and Kilar.
